I love getting advice when I desperately need it. What seems obvious to me when it comes to running is never easy for me to see when it comes to the rest of my life.

I loved the comment from Allison on my I’m Overwhelmed post that suggested I break down all my large tasks into small tasks and celebrate them like I do random PR’s.

Dorothy, I think you should apply what you do in your “running” life to what you do in your “momming” life. Remember your post on how you celebrate your little PRs? You should celebrate the little achievements that you do every day. You should celebrate the 1 or 2 things that you got done on your list, and put the other stuff that didn’t get done on the list for the next day. Or the day after that. Or next week. Girl, we are never going to get it all done.

This morning I woke up and my desk looked like this. Not very conducive for writing – right?

 
30 minutes later my desk looked like this! Much better. If this is the only thing I get accomplished today off of my to-do-list I will consider the day a success.

Tip: Training for a marathon and scared of the 20 mile runs? When I first started training for marathons I would head to an out and back trail and break my run down into 4 – 5 mile runs. 5 miles out one way, stop and take a water break. 5 miles back to the car, stop and take a water break. 5 miles in the opposite direction, stop and take a water break. Turn around and head back to the car. 20 miles done. My mind only ever counted in 5’s – so I never felt overwhelmed by having a double digit run to complete!

  5. {lifeasa}RunningMom – thank you!! My desk is one of my favorite spots in my house. My husband built it for me – he copied one he saw in a Pottery Barn catalog. It has tons of room for books on the side -the best part!

  7. I used to do my 20’s the EXACT same way on the WOD. I wanted to use my car as a water stop and I was afraid to be more than 5 miles from the car. Too funny. I like your clean shiny desk!

  8. so a thought about being overwhelmed. We as women are way to hard on ourselves. Give yourself a little slack just like you would a friend or your kid.Just do the best you can. This might sound crazy but I know you are religious cause you quote scripture all the time and have mentioned a God. I just try to remember that I am a daughter of God and and no matter what me even on the days I am overwhelmed and feel like I can’t get anything done.
