I’ll admit that even though I try to be an optimist I’m a bit of a cynic. I sometimes focus too much on the negative instead of the positive. I’m a complainer even though I have nothing to complain about. I can be overly sensitive about nothing and usually am a bit paranoid as well. These are all things that I continue to work on – on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

This past week I went for a short run to shake out my legs from Boston and was drifting off into my thoughts when a complaint arose. How come no one says hi to me?!?! I pass people walking and running all the time and I barely get a hi or even a smile. Sometimes I’ll get a nod from a runner – which is sort of a “hey we both know we are too tired to muster up a verbal hello right now” But what really used to get me is was why when people were walking they couldn’t just take a moment to be nice and say good morning.

Seriously I’ve thought about this for years – until this day when something changed. Instead of looking outward I looked inward. Maybe these people don’t say hi to me because I don’t say hi to them. Maybe they are waiting for me to take the initiative. Maybe they are having a bad morning and a simple hello and a smile from a stranger would bring a little cheer to their day. Why did this not occur to me sooner?(for the answer refer back to paragraph one)

On that day I decided from that point on I would say hi to every person I passed and to my surprise everyone said hi back to me – or good morning – or how are you? In all my my focusing on the negative it had never occurred to me that I should take the first step…..

So there you go – from now on if you see me out on the trail – I’ll be that annoying girl with a smile on her face saying hello for no reason!

Running like life is not about the first step, or even the last step, but about the steps along the way” ~ DTB
