Oh wow you run? You don’t look like a runner.
What sport did you play growing up? Hockey?
Oh gosh, I thought marathon runners were super thin….so you really run marathons? How many did you say you have run?
I’m willing to bet the vast majority of us have had an insult or two about our bodies flung our way.
Back in 2013 I wrote about looking like a runner. In that post I wrote these words:
It has taken me many years and many runs to realize that it’s not clothing that makes the girl. It’s not the speed at which she runs. It’s not how little or how much body fat she has. It’s not the Garmin she wears or the running shoes she buys. What makes the girl a runner are the thoughts inside her. Does she think she is a runner? Well then she is.
You are what you want to be. If you want to be a runner you are. If you want to look like a runner and are a runner, well then you are what a runner looks like.
To this day these are some of my favorite words that I’ve ever written.
I think of these words every time I read about someone who makes a body judgement about a runner or when a runner shares that they too have been judged as not looking like a runner.
So I’m creating a movement:
I invite you to share photos of yourself on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter using the hashtag #IHaveARunnersBody – let’s show the world that a runner is someone who runs and that we come in all shapes and sizes.
If you have a runner’s body, then that means you run right? Well if you run then you are a REAL RUNNER.
It doesn’t matter if you are running eleven minute miles at top speed or if you are dipping down in to the fives. If you run then you are a runner! You have a body? You run? You have a runners body!
Let’s BE THE EXAMPLE for our friends, our children, our family – What you look like on the outside doesn’t define who are you are or what sport you do or do not participate in!!
