I first learned of Andy Funk’s epic 365 mile bike ride from LA to Las Vegas after I saw the youtube video Vegas in 24.

To a runner 365 miles in one day is hard to fully grasp. I’m used to thinking in terms of 26.2 or how many miles a week {50+} or how many miles I run in a month {I’d have to average around 90 miles a week to fit in 365 miles in one month – yeah not happening}.

What he did must not be THAT hard if you are on a bike is what may first come to mind. If you really sit down and think about it however – what he did is nothing short of incredible – 365 miles on a bike in 24 hours?! I believe that we can dig deeper into our well of courage and endurance when we are fighting for something greater than ourselves. What he did WAS an unheard of accomplishment and that’s exactly why he did it to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer!

My grandmother and my mother in law are both breast cancer survivors. They were lucky in the sense that they were women who had support, who had good insurance and who were able to get the treatments they needed once the cancer was discovered. A key component of their survival was early detection.

Unfortunately, though billions of dollars have been spent by nonprofit and for-profit organizations, there still is no end in sight to when a cure will be found. It is a very real reality that millions of women could die from this deadly disease before the cure is found.

When I sit down and am present in the moment it sinks in hard that at the age of 34 I could have already lost two very important women to me. Which is why I’m telling you today about a fantastic organization called the Pink Lotus Foundation. The Pink lotus Foundation is a non-profit that aims to save lives by enabling underprivileged and low-income women to receive free care to screen for, diagnose, and treat breast related illnesses.

Because the Pink Lotus Foundation is a non-profit, they rely on the generosity of donors and people like Andy Funk who raise money through their efforts for the foundation. This is where YOU come in. If helping others is something that is dear to your heart consider getting involved. You don’t specifically need breast cancer to have touched you to understand the devastating effects it has on families and individuals every year.
