Overall I liked this race. It was local for me and easy to get to. Parking was close and there was plenty of it. Went to the race with my speed friend Meghan {my friend that helped me become a pre-dawn runner last fall}. Both of us are a bit crazy about getting to races super early so getting there after 6:15 was cutting it a little close for both of us. We ran some warm up miles around the neighborhood close to the start and had time to use the bathrooms before the start went off.

My goal for the race was to simply finish. Thursday I had run a pick up the pace run and had ended up with 6.2 fast and 2.3 cool down. Friday I ran 6.2 miles easy to shake out my legs and then headed to the National Zoo with my kids. 5 hours after getting there we left only because it started to rain. Needless to say I woke up Saturday with a sore body and dead-ish legs. I could have picked another day to do the zoo but I don’t want my running to in any way hinder the fun I have with my kids this summer. This time is fleeting and running will always be there.

I ran the first mile under control and was shocked that my average for the mile was 6:19. The first mile wasn’t particularly hilly and the start was a little bit downhill – after that the rest of the race was rolling hills. I found myself able to run fast under the shade of the trees but once we would hit a sunny part – I couldn’t do anything other than focus on how tired my legs were. I basically positive split the entire race. I don’t think I went out too fast, which really got me excited for what I could do if I actually train for a shorter race and don’t shoot myself in the foot by doing too much in the days leading up to it. The times of the 5 women who finished ahead of me seemed slower than what they typically run so I would say the race course wasn’t a particularly easy one. I finished in 6th place and 3rd in my age group – winning a $15 gift certificate to Potomac River Running store.

I really had a great morning. It was fun meeting some new ladies, hanging out with Meghan and running. We did cool down miles after the race and it reminded me how much I miss running with her. Nothing like running and chatting with a girlfriend to make for a great start to the day!

  1. Great job!! That is an awesome time regardless, but especially on tired legs! I told myself I was done racing in the heat but did one last minute 5k on Sunday- it was brutal. We’re moving back on the northeast in two weeks, and I am so ready for less humidity and (slightly) cooler runs!

  3. I did the race, but I ran with one of my kids so I wasn’t running full out. I thought it was an OK race. The course wasn’t my favorite because I got bored, but that may have been because I was going so much slower than I would normally. The sun was killer in some areas. I would keep it on my list as it was well run, early, and easy to park and run.

  8. You are hilarious me! Honestly I know you cat ladies think you get to people with your GOMI stuff but nothing said about me on that website bothers me in the least nor will it change what I do. You guys don’t know my life – just because I blog does not mean I inform you of everything. But since you came here to bait me with this comment I’ll respond to a couple of things….first it’s hot as CRAP outside – so yep I’m going to run shirtless in a race or on a long run. Would it be okay to post my race picture if I was wearing a shirt? Pretty sure most people post their race pictures so I don’t think it’s being into myself to do that ON A BLOG ABOUT MY RUNNING. Brag about my abs? Hmmm when did that happen? Pretty sure never. My health reports aren’t glowing…..I actually have quite a few health issues that I have been dealing with and when they are figured out maybe I’ll talk about them – maybe not. I have Gilbert’s syndrome – diagnosed by a doctor – I have OCD – diagnosed by a doctor – I had and mostly overcame social anxiety – diagnosed by a doctor – I am lactose intolerant – diagnosed by a doctor – I am gluten intolerant – also you guessed it diagnosed by a doctor {not trying to jump on a trend – lol} – I don’t eat junk all the time that hurts my stomach. I ate what I wanted and how much I wanted to ON VACATION – yep – knew it was going to hurt my stomach – just like drinking too much would give someone a hang over – but guess what – I was on vacation! Sue me. I don’t give excuses for my races – I’m actually pretty pleased with how I run and what my times are. I’m not going to spend my life training – I have three kids and I’d much rather hang out with them and be a good mom to them than spend countless hours chasing a PR that may or may not happen…..I also happen to think that taking an hour off you marathon time isn’t half bad. Will I ever be an Olympian or someone lightening fast – NOPE – but I’m a OK with how fast I am for an average runner! I guess that’s what happens when you are OK with who you are. When you don’t need to tear down others to build yourself up. I’m not in to myself at all – I know my self worth and I’m not going to spend my life hating myself simply because some random women who hide behind a computer decide to judge me even though they have never met me! Hope that helped clear up some stuff for you and NO need to post your response on GOMI – you can respond to me here if you would like :) I’m all for constructive criticism!

    Can’t believe the bitterness and negative energy oozing from GOMI – 10 minutes of that sad, sad empty anger makes my soul want to die. Whereas 10 minutes of your genuinely inspirational blog makes me want to lace up, get out there, and see what I’m made of.   11. Cool race re-cap! I am signed up to run the Diva Half Marathon near Leesburg VA in September so am hoping it will be a lot cooler than your race! This heat makes running so unbearable! I’m kind of freaking out though because the Bed and Breakfast I reserved just got SOLD and now I have to find another hotel with only two months advance and the race is sold out with 3,500 runners…. there are like NO hotels left in the area and I’m super bummed because it’s also my first weekend away from my kids, and my thirtieth birthday. I wanted to stay somewhere nice, which is why I booked a downtown B and B over two months ago!

    Sigh. The best laid plans, right?

  12. Awesome race! Great job (and time). You are so strong and I’m continually impressed how you’re able to fit in running and running a household! Meghan and I went to HS together! She was fast then as well!
