Throughout this month I’ve thought about various different topics as they related to strength, style, my life and of course running. Some of the different topics I’ve been throwing around in my head are below.

  • Best advice you’ve received throughout your career
  • Routine to cultivate a focused, strong, balanced lifestyle
  • Iconic Inspiration or role models who serve as sources of strength throughout your life
  • Your personal definition of success
  • A strong moment in your career/life (when you realized they were at a turning point, the decision you made, the outcomes of that decision)

Today I’ve decided to ramble on a little bit about how to cultivate a healthy, strong, balanced lifestyle.

As a teen and very young adult I thought finding balance was a place you arrived at. It was much like fitness in my eyes, you ran, you lost weight, you got down to what was healthy and you just stayed there. Same for being healthy, you made changes, thought you got rid of bad habits, and thought okay – I’m good for the rest of my life – bad habits are mostly gone.

What I’ve learned is that there is no place that you arrive at in life. There is no magic destination where you will find yourself, fit, happy, healthy, and strong. You may feel all of those things at once at certain times, but it does not mean that you will always feel that way.

Life is amazing, but it’s also work. You must continually cultivate the qualities you want in yourself. You have to cultivate a lifestyle that will give you what you want out of life. Often for the two steps you take forward one step back happens. It’s a part of life and in my opinion it actually helps to serve as a reminder of where you want to go and what you want out of life. Moving forward despite setbacks is all part of living.

 

You don’t need to be perfect.

Live your life like there is no one else you would rather be than YOU.

Here are some of my tips for cultivating a strong, healthy, happy lifestyle:

  • Surround yourself with like minded people who are a good influence on you professionally and/or personally.
  • If you fall of the wagon, as they say, get back on. One slip up does not spell disaster. 20 slip ups do not spell disaster.
  • Find something you like doing and pursue it. This can be something work related or not. Being happy doing what you are doing is healthy for you mentally and emotionally.
  • Wear what makes you happy, not necessarily what is trendy.
  • Treat others as you would want to be treated. Get upset when someone else doesn’t let you in when you need to merge lanes? Do you let others in when they need to merge lanes? What you give to this world comes back to you.
  • Remember that you are an important person in your own life. There is no one else that can make the changes you want to make for you. You have to be an active participant in your life.
  • Smile. Smile when you are happy, smile when you are sad, smile when you are mad. Smiling lightens things up and may even trick your mind in to being happy and/or realizing that whatever you are sad or mad about might not be all that bad in the scheme of things.
  • Dream BIG.
  • Know that every year, every month, every day, every hour gives you the chance to start fresh.
  • Make good habits part of your lifestyle. Running for me isn’t something I do to burn calories. It’s a way of life. It has become my lifestyle and feels as normal and regular to me as brushing my teeth.
  • When you are making a decision big or small – ask yourself if your future self will be happy with this choice or feel regret. The other day on a 6 mile tempo, I wanted to quit at mile 3. I asked myself if I wanted to attempt the workout tomorrow or if my future self would be really mad I didn’t just push through the pain and finish the last 3 miles strong. I ended up finishing and felt great the next day.
  • Happiness is a choice. Remember this and it makes the ups and downs of life easier. Every one has their own cross to bear. We all have issues, or problems, or bad in our lives. We GET the choice how we react to them.
