Before I had a blog I’ll admit, I didn’t really understand them.  They seemed time consuming and for what?

Blogging has changed my life.  It sounds like a dramatic statement, but it’s true.  It can change your life too and possibly help you become a faster, more consistent or happier runner.

Blogging and using sites like dailymile or even Foursquare can help keep you accountable to your training.  It is harder to skip a run when you know that what you did or did not do for the day will be posted for all your friends or training partners to see.

If you do not have friends who run or you are not part of a running group or club, the Internet allows you to make friends virtually.  Running can at times, be a very lonely sport.  While the Internet can not always help you find a friend to run with, it can help you find a virtual community of runners where you can share your passion for running.

In order to have a successful relationship with running, you must do it for yourself.

What do I mean? You are ultimately the only person who can get you out the door. The only person who can push yourself farther or faster on a run.  You are the person who will have the internal head battle that all of us runners have.  Should I run today? Will I feel better if I run? I’m tired, maybe sleep is more important today? I ran 2 days this week – I really deserve a rest day – right? You can not and should not run to impress others, to make someone else happy, it has to come from with in – in order for it to become a life long endeavour.

Allow the Internet to help you on your quest to become a runner, but do not let it take over your training life. Do not log miles just to log miles for your weekly total, those are junk miles and get you nowhere fast. Do not run faster than you should just because you know someone will see it on your facebook page.  Ultimately if you are the type of runner who trains for and run races, your blog, daily mile, etc. will hurt you if it pushes you at the wrong times. Remember the training runs are not the race. Do not peak when it does not matter.

Run your own pace so you are ready for your own race.

Has blogging, dailymile, foursquare or twitter helped you become more accountable to running and working out?

  1. Jake Rosen says:

Definitely! I don't post my runs to daily mile, but I really should. Blogging has not only made me more accountable, but has connected me with others who share their stories that inspire me to go out and run harder.

I don't have friends that run the way I do, nor am I part of a running club. Your point about people like that using social media to connect with others definitely resonates with me.

  2. Having a blog, and meeting real-life friends through a blog, has totally made me more rigid about my training and logging. Before I did any blogging or online tracking I didn't track my runs at all and just followed a training schedule for my goal race. Now I track and plan and am tempted to do way more than before. I actually have to hold myself back from doing too much, which was NOT a problem before. I think it is a good influence, though. Especially when I know not to overtrain or overcommit.

  3. I love Daily Mile. I post all my runs on there. Also, I have a feature on my blog called Say it Do it. I got the idea from Fit Chick in the City. Every week, I post a week's worth of workouts that way they're out there for the world to see. Any time I even think of skipping out on one b/c of laziness I just think of my blog and what readers would think.

  4. YES! I have found blogging incredibly helpful. Not just in keeping myself accountable, but as a newbie, I've learned a lot from other people's blogs. I also am super type-A and I record on daily mile, and on a giant training calendar hung in my room. I have to know my stats! It also helps to see improvement over time :)

  5. Lisa R. says:

I started using DailyMile after I had heard about it through a fellow Brooks ID'er- as a way to log my mileage/workouts. Now I use it for that purpose as well as to keep up with other Brooks ID'ers and have met a bunch of new "virtual" running friends as well. What was so cool was to have one of them join my Ragnar team last year and I got to meet up with a few more in Boston. My Blog started as a means to do race reports.. Now i'm trying to keep myself more accountable with it. :)

  6. mojamala2 says:

Just recently started blogging about running and it was my best decision yet. It keeps me accountable for my running and training. I love it!

  7. David H. says:

I believe that if I didn't have a blog, I wouldn't have kept going. It keeps me goal oriented. And I know that Daily Mile kept me focused on my 1,000-mile goal last year. It made it so much easier to track.

  8. I haven't totally gotten into blogging daily yet, but has helped me since it shows what miles you have run and haven't run! It motivates me to do my workout for the day!

  9. Definitely! I know ppl are used to seeing my workout tweets and I always think… ugh if I don't go for this run ppl will think I'm slacking! Same thing with my blog!

  10. Michelle says:

I have learned a lot about my running because of blogs and blogging. I used to spend so much of my time thinking about what I wasn't doing in comparison to other people and then I realized, it's all relative! I AM capable, I AM able and I am living this running life for ME….the way that works for ME….not everyone else. Seems silly as an adult that we do that to ourselves! Now I find motivation in reading blogs and an outlet for me in my own blog. It's a great little community that just adds one more wonderful element to running!

  11. Allison says:

I'm not on Daily Mile, but I try to post training recaps on my blog. And I find it useful to see how other people are training (particularly for tris since I have no background and am not exactly sure what types of workouts to do).

  12. Elizabeth says:

Yes. Great post. I use and the Facebook app. When I am running I sometimes think "my Facebook friends will see my pace for this!" I assume you are on Daily Mile? I have heard good things about that but all of my data is in RunningAhead and it's a fantastic log.

  13. Michelle says:

Definitely! Having a blog has kept me accountable and connected me with a lot of great runners. I've learned a lot and drawn support from the blog/Daily Mile community!

  14. says:

100% agree! Everyone has to run for their own reasons and the desire must come from within. I gain inspiration from reading about other people's races & training and hope to inspire others with what I do on my blog. I am definitely an average runner (half PR 1:48, full 4:42). As a high achiever in other areas…I sometimes struggle with comparing my times to other faster runners. I constantly have to remind myself that I am not competing with anyone else but myself and that is all that matters.

  15. Chunky Monkey says:

    We are working on it!

  16. Annette@(running)In the Right Direction says:

YES..I posted about this on my blog recently. It has helped with so much …totally checking out the daily mile..thanks for the links!

  17. "Run your own pace so you are ready for your own race." – LOVE IT! If that is your quote, you should be famous because that is SUCH an inspiration to me! I coach a 13-min per mile pace group with a local running club and we are constantly talking about pace and how you need to do what is right for you and not compare yourself to others. I am going to share this with them!

Blogging has done so much for me and made me realize how lucky I am to have this wonderful running community to call my friends. I have gained so much self-confidence from running and blogging, sometimes I feel like whole new person. Also, several ladies in my group have recently started blogging and it is so inspiring to watch them grow not only as runners, but as bloggers too! We get so much out of one anothers' blogs even though we run together every week.

Thank you for this post. I really like it and it hits home for me. I am thankful for blogs like yours!

  18. Mile Posts by Dorothy Beal says:

Elizabeth – Not on dailymile – I am one of those people who would become obsessed with workouts just for the sake of workouts. I know it would negatively affect me. It is also why I try my best not to count my mileage for the week – when I do count then I end up running for the sake of running instead of just sticking to the plan. I record all my workouts in my training spreadsheet where I am accountable to myself. On the left I see what I was supposed to do for the day and on the right I see what I actually did. It also helps me track what worked in my training plan and what didn't work – then I alter my plan for the next training cycle. Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't heard of that site!

  19. Mile Posts by Dorothy Beal says:

Sara – I'm laughing. That is my own quote – I liked the way the words sounded! Glad you like it :)

As for comparing yourself to others – I like to tell myself there will always be someone smarter, richer, prettier, faster, skinnier, and seemingly happier….what we see on the outside is not always the case of what is on the inside….and that is what really counts – so I need not compare myself to the seemingly visible aspects of others and just find happiness within myself :) usually works – but I'm pretty sure it is a life long struggle for most women to stop comparing themselves to others.

  20. Sugar Knickers says:

I LOVE this post, really resonates with me. I recently started a blog for myself to track my running & my goals for fitness, it keeps me honest. The only way I really fell in love with running a year ago was to love it for me and no one else, since then I've never looked back. *I linked to this post on my personal blog, hope that is all right :-)

  21. Momma K gotzt the runs says:

You know, its made me feel like I am not alone. I often felt that my love for running was mine alone but through blogs I have found a huge group of people with the same passion and goals. That has meant a lot to me.

  22. I really didn't know what this blogging stuff was. I was using it as a log, then one day a follower pop up on my screen. I made my first running buddy.
