Reading through the entries for the Saucony 26Strong marathon team has been amazing. Literally, I wish I could pick all of you, or have a blog post monthly where you all shared these types of stories – it’s so motivating and inspiring to me. I don’t love the word INSPIRE as silly as that sounds. It’s a word that I overuse and that I think is overused in general – but you women really truly are inspirational.

There is something I would like to say to all of you though…..

YOU CAN RUN A MARATHON.

Believe it to be possible and it will happen.

Marathon running is not something that is available to a select few who have been genetically gifted. No all of us can’t be Shalane and most of us can’t even be Katie but the rest of us CAN complete a marathon.

The difference between someone you know who is a marathoner and you is that – that person confronted their fears and just did it. Is it going to be easy? Probably not. Can you do it? YES.

I will forever remember running my first marathon and looking around at the men and women who were beside me and ahead of me and thinking – holy heck – that person is running a marathon – they are really doing it – why did I think I couldn’t do this? Why at mile 20 am I doubting myself when it doesn’t look like these people are?

You read these types of statements in magazines frequently – ANYONE CAN DO IT – or your friend says IF I CAN RUN A MARATHON – YOU CAN DO IT.

Here’s the thing…these cheesy statements exist and are repeated over and over again because they are TRUE.

I am no different than you.

My story is the same as thousands of others. I was overweight, depressed, and unhappy with my life. I found myself through running but it didn’t stop there – I still have to find myself. I sometimes find myself in physical or emotional situations I don’t want to be in and running still pulls me out of them each and every single time. Running has never given up on me so I won’t give up on it.

I can only pick one wannabe marathoner, but I sincerely hope all of you who have commented that you want 2014 to be your year even though you are afraid, nervous or what-not – actually MAKE 2014 your year.

I’m always brainstorming about good ideas – you know the type – like why didn’t I think of that and become a zillionaire. I want to be someone like Carolyn who started Alex and Ani. You don’t have to be the first person with an idea – you don’t even always have to be the best – you just have to act on your desire. Running is like that. Marathons are like that. If you want to become a marathoner in 2014 just make it happen. Make 2014 the year you embrace your fear, give up on your excuses and find your strong. It’s in all of us ;)

  1. I went back and read through them also. AMAZING! IT gave me a good boost to get out there today and run even though I know it’s going to hurt and I may die from allergy induced insufficient lung capacity. You’re wonderful and are running a great inspirational blog! keep it up!

  2. I love this :) I always thought people who ran marathons were awesome, and I wished I could be one of those people. Last year I ran TWO marathons, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. Now I truly know I can do ANYTHING. Thanks for continuing to inspire through your blog.

I know I am not alone when I say that a lot of people needed to read this :) No matter how excited or motivated one is to get it done, we all have those moments in training where we wonder WHY we would get up and run 22 miles. It’s posts like this that remind us. We are all part of a team here and that’s what makes this sport so amazing…always have, always will.

  5. Amen sister! It took a while for me to get the courage to take the plunge, but a marathon IS possible. I’m taking a step as an independent consultant for Rodan and Fields while getting ready to birth a baby (EEK!) lots of big things but I’m excited! 2014! Year of the changes. 2015 may be return to the marathon year for me ;-)

And even though I haven’t arrived at that marathon mileage yet I am finding that saying out loud that I WILL run this distance is already increasing my belief in my ability to do so! I cannot wait to get there and I’m grateful for women like you and those who have already commented because your support of us “wannabe” marathoners is making a real difference. Thanks!!

  7. I ran my first marathon last year in Chicago on my 50th birthday. It took me two months to stop crying because the long runs were so hard. Then I loved it. The marathon is a celebration of the training. You can all do it. Every single one of you. When you do you will have the confidence to pretty much do anything.

    I am a 34 year old mom of 2 girls. I’ve always run through high school and college, although not continuously. I’ve always known that I felt better, and my head is clearer when I run; I’ve just tried to ignore it! Ha! I started running again after my 2 nd daughter, and I met 2 girls from college running a local 5k. They were talking about coaching running one of them through her first half… “I could do that” I thought. I didn’t want to be left behind. We have since run 4 half together and haven’t looked back. We have raised money for Team in Training and Re now partnering for Moms in Training. It’s all about lying it forward!

  9. I read this post three times. It was wonderful. It was wonderful to be reminded we all start somewhere and at one point (not to be cliche) but you were in the shoes of just your regular joe. Your story hits home! It makes the daunting task seem like an attainable goal. It makes me want to grab fear by the horns and just show it whose boss! Though I’d love to be a lucky winner, I know there are far more deserving individuals. It’s not about winning, it’s about taking 2014 and making it your year! Thank you for sharing!!

  10. Great post! I’ve run 9 half marathons, but have always been intimidated by taking on a full. When I was pregnant with my son, I thought it would be insurmountable to ever return to my previous fitness or speed. Then, I came back faster and stronger and started to think a marathon was doable. I’m pregnant again, but maybe (late) 2015 or 2016 will be my year? Thanks for the reminder that we all have this in us. I just have to remind myself that!
