I know a new year shouldn’t feel all that different but it does to me.

I wrote out a long post yesterday, re-read it ten times and then decided to not publish it. I’m big on firsts and I wanted my first post of this year to be special to me.

I’ve decided in 2014 I want to go back to journaling more and I think the post belonged in my own journal and not in an online spot. It felt good to write out and even better not to publish it. Some things are better kept to ourselves…..

I didn’t run New Years Day. I spent the entire day with my family in my PJ’s and it felt REALLY good. I felt happy and content. I felt – different.

Yesterday because of some little people complications I didn’t get up to run in the 4′s. I got on the treadmill with a new sense of BELIEF in myself. Eric helped me connect the portable speakers we had and for the first time I used Pandora on my iphone – through a speaker for music. Grimm on closed captioning kept me entertained. {thank you again for all the tv show recommendations – they are helping!!} Lately I haven’t been listening to music on the treadmill when I run because I need to be able to hear my children and plugging in to headphones makes me plug out when it comes to being a mom. The speaker fixes this “issue” and made running that much more enjoyable yesterday. I was able to chat away with Colton while he played with his new tool set.

My roll as a mom comes before my running. These years are fleeting and I won’t put my running or working out ahead of them every day. This doesn’t mean I won’t be happy when they are all in school full time and I have more time to myself for things like running LONG but for now this is the balance I will set out to achieve. Running second, motherhood first.

During the run – I felt like I was dancing – waving my arms in the air like a silly person - it felt good to let go and not stress about the pace I was running. I started painfully slow and worked in to the pace rather than starting out at a moronic pace because I was too proud to start out any slower. I worked in to that moronic pace and finished feeling STRONG and tired. 11 miles – my favorite number – to start 2014 – I have a feeling it’s going to be a REALLY good year and I’m not afraid to say it.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season!! Are you excited for this year? Convinced it’s going to be good?

  1. After a really tough 2013, I’m not convinced 2014 will be better, I’m determined to make it better. If I learned anything last year it is that you cannot expect anything to happen. You have to make it happen. So this year is dedicated to making my goal happen!

  4. I’m hoping to make 2014 a year of better moderation! More cross training and more yoga. Running is great, but I have to mix it up more often. Happy New Year!

  5. I ran 11 miles yesterday, too! More personal journaling sounds like a great plan. One of my plans is to ride my bike more just because it’s fun!

  8. I’m right there with you! Just had baby number 4 and while I’m determined to get my mojo back this year (actually just started blogging about my come back)…Motherhood comes first. Kudos to you! I still stick in the headphones on the treadmill. ;) Love your blog – new follower here!

  9. Oh man, I just wrote you a book in my comment and then my comp crapped out and I lost it all when I hit the send button. I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it out as eloquently the second time, but here goes:
I have to say, I’m not surprised to hear that you’ll be running less (and consequently, blogging less), because you want to make sure you put family first. I definitely understand; although I don’t have kids, time goes by so quickly – you blink and almost 10 years has gone by and they’re almost grown up!
But I want you to know that you will be missed! Your blog has brought hope and inspiration to so many, including myself. You have inspired me to work harder, and to reach for the sky, and although I don’t know you personally, you’ve become a kindred spirit to me. MAybe it’s because your story of how you started running hit so close to home for me, but out of the many blogs out there, yours has truly resonated. So whether you decide to continue with this or not (I hope you do, even if just sporadically!), please know how much hope and inspiration you’ve brought to so many of us.

  11. I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned how family comes first for you. Unfortunately these days people are so into themselves that they seem to forget where priorities should be (exactly why I got rid of facebook.) I have been running for 22 years now, but my kids come first.
This year for me is getting back to the pure enjoyment of the run itself, and being thankful for everything.

  12. I used to be a faithful journaler. And then I started blogging and the blog became a sort of journal. There have been times I’ve written things and not published them (usually because its me venting and complaining and I just need to get it out of my system). But there are a few things that I’ve published that I wish I hadn’t, things that are just personal. Sometimes it’s good to step back and redefine that line. Good for you!

  13. I’m hoping to make this year about busting past my own doubt and fears and believing in myself more! Looking to PR on a half in May. Happy New Year to all!!

  14. Thank you for this HAPPY HAPPY post. One of my sons turned 15 this week and my other “big boy” turns 16 next week. It really is fleeting… I miss those toddler, cuddly little person days with my whole heart. I love the young men I am raising, but oh how bittersweet to look back at how quickly the time has flown… three more Christmas vacations until they graduate… oh my.
The ability to run is an incredible blessing, and we should treasure that blessing… but our family is FIRST. Good job prioritizing for 2014. Thanks for being a running inspiration also. Happy New Year!

  15. Dancing on the treadmill is the only way to do it :)

    Happy New Year, Dorothy :)

  16. Hey Dorothy!
I just found your blog and read your “About Me” section and wanted to just let you know how inspiring you are! I am a former personal trainer and I just recently had my second baby (I stopped training to stay home with my children), but I just recently started my blog as a way to share fitness tips and my personal story to help people without leaving my kids. I am really inspired by your personal story, all you’ve overcome AND how you balance it all but have put your kids before your personal dreams. I think God will definitely bless you for that! Take care!
