Day 5 Food:

  • Roasted Beets
  • Basmati Brown Rice
  • Rice Cakes
  • Peach Jelly
  • Corn Chips {not on the allergy diet at all but I wanted them and I don’t feel bad about it since I’m not allergic to corn}
  • Salad Mix
  • Juiced Carrots
  • Juiced Beets
  • Chicken

Shortly after I watched Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead I bought a juicer, as I am sure half of the people who have watched that movie have done. I really like the one I bought and I use it weekly so I think it was a good investment in my health. It’s different than just using my Vitamix to make a drink – it’s juicing the fruits and vegetables, not just chopping them up and making them into a smoothie. It just gives me another option when I don’t feel like having a thicker drink.

PM Workout:

  • 1 hour yoga class at La Fitness {there was a substitute teacher so it was more of a pilates/yoga hybrid class rather than strict yoga}

 

My stomach feels better than it has felt in years. Zero bathroom issues since starting this allergy diet. Tomorrow I go back to the allergist to test for more food allergies and to talk about how this trial elimination has gone. I’ll be honest and say that I am sort of afraid to add back in foods. I feel so fantastic inside – stomach wise and mentally that I don’t want it to end. I really thought as soon as this week was over I would be jumping up and down to stop eating like this, but I’m not. Sure I’m sort of bored of eating the same foods, but it’s forcing me to get creative.

I’m finding that the foods I’m eating have more flavor in them than I ever noticed before. I think we become accustomed to over stimulating our minds and our taste buds with processed junk that we lose the taste for real foods. It can be reversed in my opinion! Over the past year I have also found that I like foods that I HATED as a child – I can’t get enough of Brussels Sprouts and you couldn’t pay me to eat them when I was little. Maybe the same is true of adults as it is of children – you can’t tell if you don’t like something the first time you try it – you have to keep trying it.

It’s that time of the month when I would normally be crazed and cranky and for the most part I am neither of those. I have found in the past 5 days that I have been able to focus better, get more work done, and not feel overwhelmed. I’ve been able to come up with ways to make my days easier or more efficient and have been able to stick with it. It’s hard to believe that 5 days have gone by and I’m half way through day number 6. I can not even begin to explain how drastically different I feel. If you are like me and suspect you have food allergies, I’m telling you, don’t wait to get tested. Why I didn’t do this last year I have no idea. I’m beyond thankful and grateful that I went now – I know come 2015 when I have been rid of foods that were toxic to my body I’m going to feel amazing!!

Thoughts for the day:

These 5 days have NOT been easy, but they are sort of a gift to myself. Instead of bargain shopping my way out of my blues, or getting another cup of coffee – I’m giving myself the gift of health. I don’t have all the time in the world to deal with this stuff – I’m just like everyone else – I’m busy - I have three kids – I now own my own small business – I am juggling more balls than I want right now – but I am MAKING the time to make my health a priority. A happy mommy is a good mommy. If something isn’t right with your physical or mental health you can fix it – make yourself a priority and search for the answers until you find them.

I went through something similar last year, but instead of allergies, mine were sensitivities, and I went 4 weeks without the foods with the most sensitivities (http://insearchof-millerb.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-new-challenge.html; http://insearchof-millerb.blogspot.com/2013/03/halfway-through.html; http://insearchof-millerb.blogspot.com/2013/04/bringing-foods-back.html). It really does help to know what foods to avoid! Don’t be afraid to reintroduce things. A little at a time worked for me. Now, though, I seem to have developed a gluten sensitivity, so I’ve eliminated that, too, for now, anyway. Best of luck to you!

  2. It is amazing how what we eat effects how we feel. Even if you don’t have food allergies the foods we eat effect us. This has inspired me to pay more attention to how the food I am eating makes me feel.

  4. I just wanted to say I am sorry you have to deal with these food issues, but thank you for sharing. I have food allergies/intolerances as well. I recently found out after YEARS of having anaphylactic reactions that I am allergic to nuts, and I have a gluten intolerance. I also cannot tolerate corn.
    It is amazing other issues can be traced back to the food we eat. Its been over a year since I eliminated gluten from my diet, and my psoriasis is gone and I no longer wake up with puffy eyes.

  5. Good for you! You are making changes and sticking to them. It’s not easy, especially at first, but it’s incredible how fast you get used to eating/doing things in a new way, and it becomes 2nd nature.
    Sure, time is an issue, temptation is an issue, boredom of eating the same things most of the time is an issue… but you’ll be able to manage it as needed and make it work for you.

  6. So glad you are feeling better Dorothy. I am confused about something though. I have read all your daily posts concerning the elimination diet and I did some (who am I kidding-ALOT) of reading about the connection between IBS and FODMAP. How are Brussels sprouts and beets not killing your stomach as they are high on the irritant list? I know it is all individual but it can seem so crazy not knowing what is helping and what is harming.

    • Hey Lesley — I’m not doing a FODMAP diet and I am not doing this because of the IBS. I have food allergies that they determined last week with prick tests and will be having more testing done today. They wanted to see if I eliminated all the foods I am allergic too plus others that they don’t know yet if I am allergic too if I would feel better. I can’t speak to the FODMAP diet as I know nothing about it! Hope that helps :) DTB p.s. I happen to think I don’t have IBS and that all these food allergies were causing the intestinal problems…..but that is just my hunch.

  9. I’m glad you’re getting some stuff figured out finally. I probably need to go and get tested for food allergies. I know that I have a major gluten intolerance (causes migraine headaches in me) and I’m pretty intolerant of grains too–which is a bummer! I can’t even eat rice on a regular basis. I have ended up eating a mostly paleo type of diet–although I do eat some dairy. I’m still figuring it all out and I ate way too many grains and too much sugar during the holidays and am still un-doing the damage :(

  11. It stinks that you are having to go through this process but I’m sure your much more grateful knowing what the root cause of your problems are. I have Crohn’s Disease so I know all about how diet can affect your life. It’s such a relief when you can get this part of your life under control.

    I completely agree with your thoughts on retraining yourself to eat foods. I’ve been making it a priority to really eat better and my vice was chocolate. I craved it after lunch every single day but since making a conscience choice to not eat that chocolate, I’m no longer craving it. I’m sure you’ve read those studies about how some of the processed foods we eat trigger the same response as addition. I don’t know if that’s true but I sure feel like I went through cravings, then withdrawals, and now I’m free of that craving.

  12. Dorothy – THANK YOU for documenting this. I know it cannot be easy with all you have going on, but it is SO important. I mentioned the struggles my wife deals with along the same lines in another comment, and we have been doing a lot of similar things, no longer just assuming that ‘is just how it is’ regarding her problems.

    And once you open your eyes it is easy to see that ‘every time I eat X, Y happens’ or whatever. It continues to be a struggle … especially with all of the loud vegan / vegetarian / whatever voices trying to convince you that health = vegan or whatever.

I think that it is shocking that there are so many people who have simply been putting up with food allergies for so long without even realizing that their health could be improved by taking certain parts of their diet away. This, therefore, is the best possible idea, as it lets you see exactly which food it is that is causing a problem meaning that you will be able to identify it and get rid of it in the future. It might take a small amount of time to be able to work out exactly what the problem is, but you should find that you are able to do so eventually, which is great.

  20. Is there an effective natural way to treat PSORIASIS? I have tried think more than 50 treatment creams and other solutions and oral medicines but only find one effective treatment cream. You can give a try and maybe it is compatible with your kind of Psoriasis. In our case unless we explore what is suitable for our case we should not stop looking for the one that is effective for us.
