As we enter the New Year many of our thoughts turn to what we want to resolve to do in 2013. I don’t much care for resolutions anymore. Years ago I got tired of listing – loose ten pounds as one of the things I resolved to do that year and then realizing at the end of the year I hadn’t even lost one. Instead of resolutions I now come up with goals.

One of my goals for 2013 is to always remember this statement.

What we do or do not do today affects our tomorrows. The life you want to live, the body you want to have, or the runner you want to be – aren’t things that happen over one night. YET if you keep this simple principle in mind you can see yourself literally transform before your very eyes. If you want to loose 20 pounds don’t think about the 20 pounds all at once. Think in terms of a pound or two and soon you will be on your way to loosing all 20. If you want to run 20 miles, don’t think about the 20 miles all at once. Start with one mile and work your way up. It make take you 6 months before you can run 6 miles but by the end of 2013 I’m betting you will be able to run all 20.

When you want to sleep in and skip a run….ask yourself….will you regret it later?
When you want that second piece of cheesecake….ask yourself….will you regret it later?
When you put off to tomorrow what should be done today….ask yourself….will you regret it later?

  1. What a great quote!! So true!! I used to have a full list of goals to realize later on that is too much and decided to rather focus on one main goal than 10 mini goals. I usually have 1 running goal and one life goal.

  2. Definitely goals!! And the fewer the better…more quality/meanginful goals vs. a laundry list that shout out “FAIL”. I find running goals a lot easier than life goals :)

  3. I too like goals. I’ll be posting my goals this week actually. I really like your idea of asking yourself if you will regret it later. I need to remember that when I want to hit snooze! My big goal for 2013 is to run 1000 miles so no snooze buttons allowed!

  4. Goals, resolutions, whatever you want to call them, in the end the result is the same, something measurable to work towards and I’m a fan of that. I’ll be making several for 2013!

  5. That’s such a great motto, yet it’s so simple. So often I do something or don’t do something and regret, yet do it again without thinking about it. My area of weakness is more in what I eat than choosing not to run. Thanks Dorothy!

  6. Goals are so much better resolutions just depress me. I feel like a goal is easier to make decisions and steps to reach it. Goals for me for 2013 run a half in less than 2 hours and a full in less than 4 hours. The work has already commenced. I like seeing each step I take fold into my goal.

  7. Goals just seem more positive. I made most of my goals but my resolution of running 1000 miles didn’t happen. I’ll try again next year, since it does seem like a cool resolution but only if its going to help me with my goals for 2013.

  9. I am very much a goal setter. Sometimes I conquer my goals, other times I don’t. For 2013, I decided to use a “word” to focus on, which will work on all parts of my life. I also sometimes get a little too ambitious when it comes to goal setting and often bite off more than I can chew. Happy 2013!
