I am one of those runners who takes water on almost every single run. I struggle with dehydration constantly – so even an easy 5 miler can leave me feeling terrible after if I don’t bring water along.

The Clean Bottle is a bottle that opens not only from the top but the bottom as well – making it easier to [ahem] – clean. I found the seal to be tight on both the bottom and the top and have had no problems with leaking. The bottle is smooth to drink out of – no dripping.

The Runner is the carrier that fits the bottle. It didn’t slip out of my hand while running and the bottle didn’t slip out because the carrier attaches to the clean bottle itself rather than just sliding the bottle in as in most other carriers. The place to stash your gus is awesome and even though my phone didn’t fit in the carrier – it was the perfect place to put my keys – Starbucks card and license. I don’t typically run with music but if you do – this carrier allows you to use just one carrying case.

Overall I would give this bottle an 8 out of 10 because it was too heavy for me on long runs. When the company makes a smaller version of the water bottle then it will move to a 9. When they make a version that fits my Android phone – I’ll give it a 10. That being said if you are a guy [or a girl who is stronger than me] who carries an iphone you will probably really like this bottle.

Even though the bottle itself is a bit heavy in the carrier – it’s been perfect to use on the treadmill and when pushing the boys in the double stroller.

Pros:

  • Honestly one of the best handheld carriers I’ve used. No slipping or readjusting mid-run
  • Very easy to keep clean if you put something in your bottle to drink other than water
  • Hasn’t melted in the dishwasher
  • Love the phone case and place to stash your gus
  • It can not fall off your bottle because it attaches to the clean bottle

Cons:

  • The bottle is too big for me so it’s very heavy for me on long runs. Until there is a smaller option [hint hint] I’ll only be using this carrier on shorter runs
  • My Android phone was too big to fit in the pocket
  • Because it attaches with the bottle it only works with Clean Bottles

Verdict: I think it’s worth the money and my cons might be something you like. Check out www.cleanbottle.com for more information. You can also find them on twitter @cleanbottle

The video is worth watching to see first hand how the bottle looks and works!

The Clean Bottle was on ABC’s Shark Tank – http://triathlon.competitor.com/2012/01/news/clean-bottle-appears-on-abcs-shark-tank_46687

  1. Which handheld water bottle do you recommend? I have a Nathan handheld but I find it to be too heavy and it sometimes leaks.

Looks like a great bottle — interesting that the bottom unscrews just like the top! Glad to know there’s no leaking despite this feature.

  3. I’ve been wanting this since I first heard about it. I ALWAYS carry my phone for safety reasons, and like you I also always have water (same dehydration issues). Sometimes it’s a struggle trying to figure out how to carry everything, and I haven’t had the best luck with any of the belts I’ve tried so far. I was wondering how heavy this was, and you answered that, so thank you. :)

    • I use a SpiBelt for my phone. I feel like I need to have it for safety reasons and smart phones get heavy when added to a water bottle. If I put it in the SpiBelt I just forget about it :) Totally recommend it!

It’s unfortunate that so few vendors take into account the size of newer smartphones; I guess they still think everyone uses an iPhone. I would probably buy this bottle but if it won’t fit your phone it won’t fit mine either. I use an Amphipod belt and like it a lot, but a handheld bottle with a phone pouch would be nice for travel and shorter runs.

PS – If you install the Starbucks app on the phone you don’t need the card and you’ll have one less item to forget or lose.

  5. I don’t think I could run with a hand bottle that large, but it would be great on the bike!

haha Brendan and I watched this guy on Shark Tank!!!

  7. This was the first “hand-held” sports bottle that I have ever tried and I loved it. In addition to taking it on runs, I have used it as my cell-phone holder during gym workouts

  8. Love my Clean bottles! My husband and I originally purchased them a few years ago to use when we were logging miles on our tandem bicycle but we use them for running as well. They are a bit large for my small hands but I do run with one.
