I had planned to wake up early Sunday to do an easy recovery run, but with no one to meet me I didn’t feel accountable to waking up early. The kids slept in and so did I. 7:45 wake up call was NICE compared to my normal wake up time of 5:45 or earlier.

Eric and I chatted for a good portion of the morning about my new website make over! The new MilePosts.com will be launching in April before the Boston Marathon – work began on it yesterday. I’m exited to have a space on the internet that is MORE me than just a generic template.

I was tracking friends and clients who were racing.

Jocelyn of Enthusiastic Runner was running the NYC half in an attempt at a sub 2 hour half marathon. I was excited for her because I just new her BIG DREAM would come true today.

The final refresh of the screen revealed a 1:54. I jumped for joy – literally. I quickly grabbed my phone and ran outside to call her – mid way through my cheesy I’m so excited for you message I started to cry – oh my goodness Dorothy – really? Crying about her PR. Truth was I was proud of her but also excited that my plan for her had been working. Jocelyn was already in shape to go sub 2 when she asked me to be her coach – what she needed was someone who BELIEVED in her. She also needed to learn the priciples of fast and slow running and how you have to do both to get faster. We also worked on starting slow and finishing strong.

As I would find out minutes after my phone call – Jocelyn didn’t even know her finish time. She had forgotten her watch at home. When she called me back and asked me what her time was I got to be the bearer of GREAT NEWS!

Reading her recap of the race made me feel warm and fuzzy inside – yes I just said that. I think the world would be a better place if everyone would just go for a run. Yes I also just said that. Jocelyn falling in love with running makes me happy. I want EVERYONE to feel what I feel when it comes to running. I want it to give them more confidence. I want it to inspire them on a daily basis. I want it to show them that the sky is the limit. DREAM A BIG DREAM.

Morning quickly turned to afternoon.

I asked the kids if they wanted to go on a family run. I wanted them on board before I asked hubby.

They were pumped and ran to ask him. How could he say no?

When we started the run he asked me how many we were running – I said 3 or 4 – we can make it more if we want – he said he was good with 3. In my head I said I would be good with 5 or more.

We ended up running 5.5 triple stroller miles [I pushed the whole way - but I will note that he offered to push them - I was being stubborn and wanted to see if I still had my triple stroller mojo]

I dropped them off at home and asked if I could tack on some more miles – cause you know 5.5 miles pushing 3 kids isn’t enough [kidding]

2.5 glorious solo miles alone – running in a sports bra and capris. Oh how I love warm weather!

Stroller runs are HARD. If you want the hardest workout of your life then borrow three kids and push a stroller. Every moment hurts and you look forward to any sort of slight down hill to help carry the kids. I want to quit every mile – but I don’t. If you don’t give up in workouts – you don’t give up in races. I wanted a full body workout and I got one.

  • Mile 1: 8:28
  • Mile 2: 8:41
  • Mile 3: 8:33
  • Mile 4: 8:24
  • Mile 5: 8:37
  • Mile 6: 7:52 [half triple stroller - half solo]
  • Mile 7: 7:36
  • Mile 8: 7:03

It was the perfect last run of winter. I took a rest day yesterday after running 7 days last week.

The first time I watched my mom run Boston Marathon I was waiting for her after Heartbreak Hill. My mom who is a generally quiet person and whom I have only heard use a curse word on a few occasions – crested Heartbreak Hill and yelled out to me. *I crushed that f*cking hill – I crushed that f*cking hill* Typing it gives me goosebumps. She was so proud of herself – invincible. She was STRONG.

I am starting to feel stronger. I want to have that same STRONG feeling she had - in 4 weeks when I crest Heartbreak hill. Boston won’t break my heart this year. I plan on CRUSHING it.

How are you celebrating this first day of spring? With a run?

  1. I am so excited to hear how Boston goes for you. You ARE going to CRUSH it this year. I need to start making a list because there is a lot of runners I need to track this year. Next year, people can track me! :-)

  2. Wow, you are so impressive. I ran with only one little one yesterday in the single and barely made 5 miles (and was thrilled with a pace under 8:40). I miss the days of my husband and I running together, it’s been years. A family run with the double sounds like just what we need! Also, congrats on all of your success as a coach…making others dream big! I can’t wait to read the progress, both mentally and physically, of your last few weeks of Boston training.

  3. I’m a new follower and I LOVE your blog! I too love crushing hills. I can’t wait to run Boston and NYCM someday!!
    You will kill it!! :)

  4. I’m glad you enjoy coaching so much. I’m sure it gives a sense of satisfaction that is different than your own running yet still very rewarding. It’s probably a great learning experience too.

And great job on the stroller running. I know you’ve mentioned that it’s helped to make you a stronger running. I did 6 stroller miles two Saturdays ago followed by 7.1 stroller miles the next day. During those runs I was wondering what the best comparison would be to “normal” running training is. Do you think that comparing it to uphill running is reasonable? Also, I’m looking forward to reading the stroller chapter that I believe you contributed in the Train Like a Mother book. Should be getting our family’s copy on Thursday. :-D

  7. Can’t wait to hear how Boston goes for you! My cousin will be running it for the first time this year too. I’m hoping to be there one day. I will not be celebrating the first day of spring with a run, but will be walking instead. Maybe I’ll throw a few running intervals in there because I can =) I WILL be spending it doing some reading about running though
