Last week I did a post on making your own race gear. I was inspired by my Hood To Coast teammate This Mama Makes Stuff to get back to my crafting roots.
I love to talk all things running but with every post Carrie posts she reminds me that I need to have other creative outlets in my life that do not involve breaking a sweat. I need balance.
I recently found this awesome vintage frame at a yard sale for $1. I was excited to turn it into jewelry art work. I had done this with a frame my grandmother had given me and love it – so I envisioned making another one to hang more of my costume jewelry on rather than having it lay around my closet.
The more I looked at the frame however the more I loved it and the more I wanted to leave it as is. It was a piece of art on it’s own. I set it on a little dresser my husband refinished for me.
The dresser was a light wood that I did not love, it had tacky gold handles on it. He sanded it down, spray painted it white and I added different style knobs I found at Anthropologie. I liked using different colors and styles to add more character to the piece.
Below is the frame from my grandmother that I turned into usable art in my bathroom. I took wire and used a staple gun to secure it to the frame. Hung the frame and then took attractive pins and put them in the wall behind the frame. I hang necklaces from the pins and earrings from the wire. Get creative when making yours. If you have lots of earrings – make the whole frame for them. Don’t wear earrings – hang the picture frame and just use pins for hanging necklaces. What you do is up to you. I picked my favorite jewelry that I enjoy seeing on a daily basis.
Carrie recommends Savers Thrift stores as a great place to find crafting items. Unfortunately they do not have a location near me so you can find me Saturday summer mornings driving around to yard sales.

Do you live in the Northern Virginia Area? Any thrift stores you would recommend? I’m on the hunt for vintage sheets if you know where to find some awesome ones!
