What is Team Sparkle? A fun company that makes sparkle skirts for your athletic endeavours.

Why are they better than other running skirts from companies I won’t name? Because you wear them over your regular running clothes.

It is no big secret that I love Saucony and only wear Saucony to run in, so when I heard we had to wear some sparkly skirts as part of our outfits for Hood To Coast with nuun, I was less than excited.

Me a skirt? It is not that I do not like skirts, I do. I used to run in them.
For many years I was a runner but only considered myself a girl who ran instead of a runner girl. When I finally started to believe that I was a runner, I ditched the skirt because I wanted to dress like *REAL* runners do. I wanted to look legit. I wanted to look fast even if I was not. Costumes were for people who were running their first race, or who were weekend warriors in my eyes, they were not for people who did tempos, track workouts, progressions runs, and the like. Skirts were for other women but they were not for me anymore.
As usual God decided to teach me a lesson about my silly notions of what a runner wears and what they don’t wear.
When I was handed my red Team Sparkle skirt, I thought it was cute, but still was debating not wearing it. As soon as we arrived at the start of Hood To Coast, I knew. I knew I would wear that sparkly skirt because that is what the TEAM was doing. What the team wants, I want. It is a totally different mentality when you are racing as a team instead of an individual.
My first leg was down MT Hood. The skirt bothered me a little, mostly because I felt like I looked dumb, I didn’t think that anyone could possibly think I was a runner if they saw me in a sparkly skirt.
Something magical happened on the side of that mountain………
When I looked down at my watch and saw 5:59, my fastest mile in a race ever, I knew I loved that skirt. I am a real runner, doesn’t matter what I am wearing, or you are wearing. It felt BEYOND awesome passing people in a red sparkly skirt.

I’m not bragging. I don’t usually compare myself to people in races, but something happens to me during a relay. I want to win. I want to pass people. I want to be fast. I want to DO IT FOR THE TEAM.

My 2nd run was in the middle of the night. It too was awesome for it’s own reasons. On this leg I did not get passed once. NOT ONCE. I kicked butt. It was the most pain I have ever been in during a race. My quads were screaming out from the massive downhill on my first leg. My abs were hurting from my breathing. My arms felt like bricks as the lactic acid built up in my body.

I DID NOT SLOW.

I played catch the blinking lights, and caught every runner I saw.

In the last 1/2 mile I had to push it hard to catch the 1 last light ahead of me. When I finished I immediately started dry heaving and thought I was going to throw up all the pizza I had eaten earlier. The man I passed came up to me and said *that was real mean passing me like that in the finish* I was still dry heaving and breathlessly responded – do you know how hard I just worked to pass you. To which he responded – *at least you ran past me so fast you made me look like I was standing still*

He had BEEN SKIRTED, which is wayyyyyy worse than getting chicked.

For my last and final leg I was excited that it was finally cool enough to wear my new ViziPro Pink arm warmers, and hat which I thought looked fantastic with my skirt. I do not typically look in the mirror and think hey you look good today, in fact I usually think quite the opposite.

The skirt gave me some sort of magical confidence. I walked around thinking that I was living in a dream world.

I was a runner. I was a fast runner. I was running freaking HOOD TO COAST. I was running as a sponsored runner. I was running for nuun. Is this my life? Everything clicked for me in that race. I finally felt like I was enough.
So as cheesy as it may sound, that sparkle skirt helped me find confidence I had been lacking. I’m tempted to order a bunch more and wear them at every race!

Who knew a skirt could have magical powers? Not me :) Do you think the moms in the carpool line would look at me weird if I just wore it around town? Maybe it could give me super powers when I’m not running!

I had seen the photos and was wondering what was up with the skirts! I think it comes down to what makes you feel the most comfortable while running. I personally prefer skirts for longer runs and shorts for shorter runs!
