It’s a constant battle between my mind and my fitness. I’m constantly feeling out of shape and under prepared for races. This morning while lamenting to my mom about runs that have been less than great, she reminded me the runs are not the race. It’s easy to have lots of less than great runs and still have a kick-butt marathon. I’m hoping she is right. This morning I treated myself to 1 quick mile on the treadmill to get the blood flowing before starting my day. I may have to start more days like this – it helped me find the calm before the storm. This afternoons workout was a 3 mile tempo, with a 2 mile warm up and 1 mile cool down.

Mile 1 – Comfortable pace
Mile 2 – Got a little faster – still really comfortable
Mile 3 – 7:08
Mile 4 – 7:08
Mile 5 – 6:53
Mile 6 – Comfortable

Not sure why tempos feel so hard to me on the treadmill. Why do I feel I can run faster outside? Is this common I wonder….

On another note National Marathon is looking for volunteers!!! If you know anyone interested in helping out at either the expo or the race please forward them this link. http://www.doitsports.com/volunteer2/jobs-by-date.tcl?event_id=202049

If you are interested in being a general volunteer you can also visit the National Marathon website at www.nationalmarathon.com

It is common. I always feel faster out on the road than on the dreadmill. Your mile splits are plenty fast for what it is worth…

Yes, running on the TM feels harder for me, too. I wondered if something was wrong with my TM or if it was only my imagination.

  3. It's not just you– tempo runs are definitely a lot harder on the treadmill for me as well. My treadmill tempo pace is about 7:50, but when I am outside I can do them at 7:40 or faster, depending on the weather. I think it's due to overheating and a lack of air moving. A fan helps, but just slightly. Anyway, I think you will be really well prepared for the marathon. Your mom is very wise!
