Make a plan. Achieve your goals.

Last year I set the somewhat lofty goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I needed to drop 20 minutes off my best marathon time. I dropped almost 24 minutes.

This year I set the somewhat lofty goal of pr’ing at every race distance I’ve run.

5K – pr’ed twice
8K – pr’ed
10K – pr’ed 3 times
10 Mile – pr’ed twice
1/2 Marathon – pr’ed twice
Marathon – pr’ed twice

Achieving my goals really proved to me the importance of having them, of making a plan and sticking with it. If you believe something is possible – it is. If you believe you can do something – you can. If you believe you can win[figuratively speaking] – then you will. If you believe you can’t – then you won’t.

After much thought my 2010 race goals are:

Break 20:00 in the 5K – will need to average 6:26 miles
Break 40:00 in the 10K – will need to average 6:26 miles
Break 1:10:00 in the 10 Miler – will need to average 6:59 miles
Break 1:30:00 in the 1/2 Marathon – will need to average 6:52 miles
Break 3:30:00 in the marathon – will need to average 8:00 miles

Some of these goals are more feasible than others. They are my goals nonetheless. I will set out to achieve them all.

There is a common bond all of us share as runners. It’s called running. Yet each and every one of us has different goals. For some of us it’s to get faster. For others it’s to run longer. Still others it’s to run a race for the first time after years of running. All goals should be respected because to each of us they represent a possibility not yet achieved.

What are your 2010 goals?

One of my favorite sayings is 'PMA' (positive mental attitude) not 'PMS' (you know what that one is) and you've got the PMA going sista! Congrats on your 2010 goals. I believe that you'll get 'em done. Mine, it is to keep my bod healthy and strong while I run 12 marathons here and abroad this year and keep it going next year too… Cheers!
