Some stats I found interesting on marathons and running :)

According to Running USA an estimated 412,000 people ran a marathon in the US in 2007. The median time for males was 4:20:04 and for females it was 4:49:48! In 1980 the median time for male marathon finishers was 3:32:17 and for females it was 4:03:39.

Boston had the fastest median time of any marathon with a 3:48:40 followed by the National Marathon with 4:01:36, Steamtown in PA came in 3rd with a median time of 4:03:05, Philadelphia came in 4th with a 4:03:35. This makes me wonder if these are fast courses or if faster runners just run these races??

I ran the National 1/2 this year and had a great time – not sure if I liked the course but the company was great and I pr’ed – Boston was challenging but fun – I loved Philly when I ran it in 2003 and at the time that was my PR – I’ve never run Steamtown but I’ve heard that it’s downhill and great to use as a BQ. It also happens to finish in Scranton which is where my great grandmother lives – she will be 101 this year!

The top 4 largest marathons in 2007 were New York, Chicago, Honolulu and Marine Corps. ugggghhhh – no wonder I always feel so jammed at Marine Corps. Maybe they should do a wave start like Boston?!?!

Boston again tops the marathon list of runners who finish in under 4 hours(64% in 2007), followed by New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.
